Cumbria Police Rural Crime Team Raise Awareness Around Horse Trailer Thefts
At the weekend we supported South Lakes Police at the horse sales at J36 North West Auctions. Trailer thefts is a huge problem nationally so it was an ideal opportunity to carry out some checks. It also fell during Operation Gallop week of action- so lots of engagement with our equine community.
Numerous trailers were examined and we worked alongside the National Rural Crime’s NCATT team to seize a trailer believed to be stolen. Enquiries are ongoing regards this. It also allowed us to speak to trailer owners and discuss some measures they can take to protect their equipment and themselves.
Much as we hate seeing people having their trailers stolen, we often see innocent purchasers lose out too, as the trailer they purchased is then seized.
If you’re buying second hand there are some checks you can do…
The Equipment Register – TER database can check for reports of stolen property
Speak to your local dealer- they may be able to carry out further checks
Ask the seller for documentation relating to the trailer and for images of the serial number
Physically check the frame and any identifying marks in person
If you own a trailer and you’re concerned, here are some tips….
Note down the serial number- better still take a photo of the ID plate. These are usually located on the a-frame
Register your trailer with @TheEquipmentRegister
Make your trailer identifiable- Datatag ID Limited or other property marking such as DeterTech or SelectaDNA
Use our “stop me” trailer stickers
We’re always happy to chat through what you can do or arrange a visit- drop us a DM or email ruralcrimeteam@cumbria.police.uk
